Conferences

I enjoy sharing my experience with others in the hope of making a difference in their careers. To this end I have presented at several industry conferences over the years.

ApacheCon NA 2013 – Portland, OR

Top 10 Network Issues in Apache CloudStack

CloudStack is highly flexible when it comes to the infrastructure it manages. It supports multiple hypervisors and network features, and even provides network services itself. The result is complexity which makes it difficult to troubleshoot network issues. This talk will identify the top 10 CloudStack network issues, as well as explain troubleshooting techniques to troubleshoot and resolve them.

Advanced CloudStack Troubleshooting using Log Analysis

Apache CloudStack provides vast amounts of log entries, and they are distributed throughout the environment. For a CloudStack administrator, investigating errors in the logs is an inevitable task. This may initially seem difficult, but it is possible with the right approach. Using examples, this talk will detail techniques that enable effective analysis of the logs generated by CloudStack.

CloudStack Collaboration Conference NA 2013 – Santa Clara, CA

Troubleshooting Strategies for CloudStack Installations

Cloudstack is a high-availability Infrastructure as a Service cloud management platform. Because of complex architecture and various components involved, troubleshooting can be challenging. This talk addresses some of the common issues that administrators and users face during installation of the product and building the cloud; it also provides debugging strategies for those common problems.

CloudStack Collaboration Conference NA 2014 – Denver, CA

Troubleshooting Apache CloudStack Environments

Apache Cloudstack is a high-availability Infrastructure as a Service cloud management platform. Because of the complex architecture and various components involved, troubleshooting can be challenging. This talk helps administrators understand, troubleshoot, and solve common issues they may face during implementation and maintenance of CloudStack, especially in networking-related areas such as VLANs and Security Groups. Since troubleshooting frequently requires analyzing log files, this talk will also help make sense of the logs and include real-world examples.

Southern California Linux Expo 13x – Los Angeles, CA

Getting to Know Linux-IO

Linux-IO provides the latest and greatest SCSI target available for Linux. It is included in the Linux kernel and works with open source user space utilities. As such it does not require a specialized Linux distribution, rather it can be used with the distribution of your choice. This presentation will briefly cover the history, use cases, and technical details of Linux-IO, while the focus will be on building an iSCSI SAN using general purpose Linux distributions such as Ubuntu or Fedora.

ApacheCon NA 2016 – Vancouver, BC

Common CloudStack Issues and their Solutions

Apache CloudStack is a high-availability orchestration platform for public and private Infrastructure as a Service clouds. With so many moving parts in the typical IaaS cloud, troubleshooting the issues that inevitably arise can challenge even the most seasoned IT professional. This talk will help cloud administrators understand, troubleshoot, and (most importantly) solve common issues faced during the implementation and maintenance of CloudStack. Particular problem areas will be covered including networking and VLANs, Security Groups, hosts (hypervisors), system VMs, virtual routers, and log files. Real-world examples will be used wherever possible.
